The Washington Commanders gameday experience is a mix of historic NFL tradition, loyal (and long-suffering) fans, and a team trying to build a new identity—all set in the heart of the D.C. metro area. Whether you’re a diehard fan, visiting for the first time, or curious about the team’s rebirth, a game at Commanders Field (formerly FedExField) offers a raw, passionate, and evolving atmosphere.
1) COMMANDERS FIELD OVERVIEW
Location
-
Located in Landover, Maryland, about 25 minutes east of D.C.
-
Older stadium (opened in 1997), known for its size and former reputation—but recent ownership changes have sparked big upgrades.
-
Seating capacity: ~62,000 (downsized from former ~90k+)
Real Talk:
-
The gameday experience has improved since new ownership took over in 2023, but it’s still a work in progress compared to newer NFL venues.
-
That said, the fan passion is legit, and there’s a renewed sense of hope and excitement under the new regime.
2) FAN CULTURE & ENERGY
Who You’ll See:
-
Old-school fans still rocking Sean Taylor, Riggins, or Art Monk jerseys.
-
Younger fans repping new-era stars like Terry McLaurin or Sam Howell (or hoping for the next franchise QB).
-
Military families, DMV locals, and a strong away fan presence, especially against big teams like the Cowboys, Eagles, or Steelers.
Fan Vibe:
-
Gritty, loyal, and loud when things are going well.
-
A mix of excitement and cautious optimism—this fan base has been through a lot but is finally starting to believe again.
Traditions:
-
“Hail to the Commanders” (a reworked version of “Hail to the Redskins”)
-
Drumline & DJ inside and outside the stadium
-
Occasional Sean Taylor tributes, especially on his remembrance day
3) TAILGATING SCENE
Where It Happens:
-
The parking lots around the stadium (Purple, Orange, Green, etc.) open 4 hours before kickoff.
-
Some of the best tailgating in the NFC East (despite the stadium’s rep)—fans bring smokers, speakers, and strong opinions.
What to Expect:
-
Grilled food, ribs, sausages, crab cakes (Maryland pride), chili, and wings.
-
Local beers, whiskey, and shots shared among strangers.
-
Fans blasting go-go music, hip hop, or classic rock.
-
Cornhole, football tosses, and strong anti-Cowboys sentiment—even if Washington isn’t playing Dallas that day.
4) INSIDE THE STADIUM
Atmosphere:
-
Recently improved: new video boards, upgraded sound system, cleaner concessions, and a more upbeat vibe.
-
Loudest during NFC East games and rivalry matchups.
-
Drumline and DJs keep the energy going between quarters.
-
Team plays DMV hip hop, go-go beats, and classic stadium rock.
Food & Drink:
-
Upgraded concessions in recent years.
-
Stadium classics mixed with local flavor: crab cakes, mumbo sauce wings, local beer (DC Brau, Atlas Brew Works).
-
Prices are typical NFL high but quality has improved.
5) FAMILY-FRIENDLY?
-
It’s gotten much better—cleaner facilities, more organized security, and family zones in the 400 levels.
-
Still can get rowdy, especially in rivalry games or when visiting fans roll deep.
6) GETTING THERE & PARKING
-
Driving is the most common option—stadium is in a suburban area with limited transit access.
-
Parking lots open 4 hours before kickoff. General parking is ~$50.
-
Uber/Lyft drop-off zones exist but traffic can be rough after games.
-
The Morgan Blvd Metro Station (Blue Line) is ~20-minute walk to the stadium, but not ideal for night games.

The Washington Commanders tailgating experience is one of the most passionate and underrated in the NFL. Despite years of ups and downs on the field (and off it), the fanbase has held tight to the tradition of solid pregame vibes, grilled eats, and loud loyalty in the lots around Commanders Field (formerly FedExField) in Landover, Maryland.
1) THE OVERALL VIBE
-
Old-school loyalty meets new-era hope—a blend of lifelong fans in throwback gear and younger fans repping new players.
-
The atmosphere is gritty, welcoming, and real—Commanders fans are loyal, even after tough seasons.
-
Tailgating here is well-established—not fancy or corporate, but full of flavor, music, and camaraderie.
2) WHERE TAILGATING HAPPENS
Main Tailgate Lots:
-
Purple, Orange, Green, and Red lots surround the stadium.
-
Lot D (especially) is known for its strong tailgate culture—longtime fans, DJs, and legit setups.
-
Many fans also tailgate in private or unofficial nearby lots that open even earlier and allow more flexibility.
3) FOOD & DRINK
Tailgating in the DMV (D.C./Maryland/Virginia) comes with serious flavor:
What You’ll See on the Grill:
-
BBQ ribs and pulled pork
-
Hot dogs and burgers
-
Wings tossed in mumbo sauce (a D.C. classic)
-
Crab cakes or Old Bay-dusted everything (fries, shrimp, chips)
Drinks:
-
Coolers packed with beer (Yuengling, Bud Light, Modelo, local craft brews like DC Brau)
-
Whiskey, Hennessy, Fireball, and homemade cocktails
-
Some groups bring full bars, signature drinks, or jello shots to share
4) MUSIC & ENERGY
-
Expect go-go, hip hop, old-school R&B, and hype tracks blasting from portable speakers.
-
Some tailgates hire DJs, set up PA systems, or run playlists off tailgate TVs.
-
There’s usually dancing, cornhole, beer pong, and impromptu debates about QBs, rivalries, and the glory days.
5) FAN CULTURE
-
Many fans still wear Sean Taylor jerseys and pay tribute to the team’s legends.
-
Some show up in burgundy and gold face paint, customized gear, or vintage “Hogs” costumes.
-
You’ll see Washington Football Team, Commanders, and even Redskins gear—all in the same tailgate.
-
Visiting fans are present, but Commanders fans are loud and proud—especially after ownership changes brought renewed optimism.
6) FAMILY-FRIENDLY?
Yes—but choose your spot wisely:
-
Outer lots tend to be more relaxed and better for families.
-
Inner lots (especially near the stadium) are rowdier, more adult-focused.
-
There are still games, snacks, and space for kids to hang out—just keep an eye on the alcohol-fueled energy.
